The Hawai‘i Housing Lab is a research-based design platform exploring Holistic Housing for the Hawaiian archipelago and the rest of the world.

Holistic Housing is defined by five guiding principles:

I

Walkable, Sustainable and Equitable
Holistic housing is pedestrian-centered, environmentally friendly, and considers socioeconomic and digital equity. Holistic Housing is supported by incentives, programs and platforms that provide long term stability for residents.

II

Home is Everything
Holistic housing is defined as a central component of a system rather than an isolated entity. Holistic Housing relies on a nested understanding of dwelling, including multiple scales of engagement, and the tangible and intangible elements of design.

III

Closed Loops
Holistic housing is an integral part of both the natural and built environments. It carefully considers inputs and outputs, acknowledging the spatial limitations and finite resources defining communities.

IV

All Hands on Deck
Holistic housing is generated through an inclusive design process. It invites the community to actively participate across the entire planning and design process, from early phase strategy sessions to ideation workshops to final decision making.

V

Extreme Events
Holistic housing supports the physical, mental, social, educational, and economic well being of its residents through moments of crisis.

Holistic Housing
Design Framework

The Holistic Housing Design Framework presents five Guiding Principles, twelve Design Strategies, and thirty-six Design Actions for designing Holistic Housing in Hawai‘i and the rest of the world. This design framework is based on foundational research that began with conversations with thirty families on five islands and is rooted in learnings from the global pandemic.

Holistic Housing
Design Toolkit

The Holistic Housing Design Toolkit is a collection of resources that expands upon the content of the Holistic Housing Design Framework.

The toolkit intended to inspire future designs, inform redevelopment processes, and support community engagement activities in the future planning of mixed-income / mixed-finance housing across Hawai‘i.

The toolkit is made up of manuals and tools that can be used alone or in combination with one another.

BLUE SET
The Holistic Housing Design Framework focuses on the qualitative aspects that comprise a Walkable, Sustainable, and Equitable community.

The illustrated handbook is paired with the Imagine Your Community and Case Study Cards.

GREEN SET
The Understanding Density Visualization Catalog is centered on the more quantitative qualities of community and presents an overarching approach for exploring comfortable density.

The manual is organized in two parts. Part one centers on measuring local density, including the analysis of existing neighborhoods and housing typologies. Part two presents a series of possibilities at multiple scales of engagement.

The catalog is paired with the Know Your Density, Density Alphabet, and Design Your Home cards. The Plan Your Neighborhood digital application complements the catalog and card sets.

YELLOW GUIDE
The Inclusive Design How-to Guide explains how the manuals and tools can be used by different user groups for a series of typical use cases.
